"A Brahmin should study and understand the Veda along with its six limbs The Vedāngas or 'limbs of the Veda' are auxiliary sciences: phonetics, ritual, grammar, etymology, meter, and astrology. as a matter of duty, without seeking any personal reward."
According to this sacred scripture, and also from the words of the holy teacher Shri Shankaracharya:
"The Veda should be studied daily, and the duties prescribed therein should be performed well."
Because it is absolutely necessary for the twice-born term: Dvija (twice-born). Refers to members of the three upper social classes whose second 'birth' is their initiation into Vedic study. to perform the duties mentioned in the Vedas after studying them with their six limbs; and because this status of being "twice-born" is dependent upon the initiation ceremony term: Upanayana. The sacred thread ceremony marking the start of formal education., as stated in the verse:
"The first birth is from the mother, and the second is from the initiation."
Furthermore, the scripture states:
"One should initiate a Brahmin in the eighth year and teach him; a Brahmin should establish the sacred fires in the Spring and perform the New and Full Moon sacrifices."
Knowledge of the years, knowledge of the Spring season, and knowledge of the New and Full Moon sacrifices cannot be managed at all without Astrology term: Jyotisha. This encompasses astronomy, mathematics, and astrology.. Among the limbs of the Veda, Astrology is considered the organ of sight. Just as human life is rendered useless without eyes, one must certainly study the science of Light note: original: "Jyotih-shastra", another name for Astrology/Astronomy. which serves as the eyes.
And because it is said:
"It consists of three branches: Siddhanta (mathematical astronomy), Samhita (omens and collective destiny), and Hora (horoscopy)."
Since the collection of auspicious moments term: Muhurta. A unit of time or an 'election' chosen for starting an activity. is counted within the Samhita division, and because of the saying of the elders:
"A task started at an auspicious moment will be accomplished quickly, but one started at an inauspicious moment will never succeed."
