CONDILLAC’S

Étienne Bonnot de Condillac (1714–1780) was a major figure of the French Enlightenment. He is best known for Sensationalism, the theory that all human knowledge and mental abilities are derived entirely from the five senses.

Original: "Traité des sensations" (1754). In this influential work, Condillac uses the metaphor of a statue being granted one sense at a time to explain how human consciousness is formed.
