The measurement for the set square original: "Moolaimattam" - a tool used to ensure right angles is ten fingers term: "Viral" - a traditional unit of measurement based on the width of a finger on one side and eight fingers on the other. The corner should be joined and curved into a square shape; ensure the finger measurements are precise.
(Meaning) When describing the size of the set square, one side is ten fingers long and the other side is eight fingers long. The middle corner should be bent to form a square. Study and adopt these finger measurements carefully.
From the fibers of palm, screw-pine, hemp, and bowstring hemp,
Along with the fine threads of the banyan and mountain ebony,
Twist a strong rope with great skill,
I shall now describe the thickness required in fingers.
(Meaning) Take the fibers from the Palmyra palm, Screw-pine, Hemp, Bowstring hemp, Banyan, and Mountain ebony original: "Aathi" and "Ilathi". Combine these fibers to twist a rope that matches the thickness of a fingertip. (58)
If the rope is twisted with three strands,
It is suitable for priests original: "Vippirar" - Brahmins, celestial beings, and kings.
Ropes of two strands are for the merchants and laborers,
I shall now speak of the appropriate qualities for these.
(Meaning) A three-strand rope is for the gods, the learned priests, and the rulers. A two-strand rope is for the merchant class and the agriculturists original: "Velalar". (59)
The length of the gnomon term: "Sangu" - a conical or cylindrical peg used in ancient surveying to determine directions via shadows is twelve fingers,
Its thickness is determined by the same measure,
The circumference at the top is three-fourths of that,
It should be crafted to taper perfectly to a point.
(Meaning) The length of the gnomon is twelve fingers. Its thickness is one and three-quarters at the base. The circumference at the head is derived from this, and the top should be shaped into a fine point. (60)
For the gods of the sky down to the humans of earth,
I shall name the woods suitable for the gnomon:
The Sacred Fig, the Banyan, the Cluster Fig, and the Sissoo,
The dark Ebony and the Indian Rosewood; carve from these.
(Meaning) For both divine and human purposes, the wood for the gnomon should be sourced from the Sacred Fig Peepal, Banyan, Cluster Fig, Sissoo, Ebony, or Rosewood. (61)
To place the gnomon, first level the ground perfectly,
If you take a single rod as the measure, the width... illegible due to smudge?
