After taking the measurements for the length and level of the ground equally,
Place the faultless conch The "Sanku" or gnomon/conch is used for orientation and as a ritual foundation stone using a solid material.
(Meaning:) When placing the conch, level the ground and take a measurement of one rod Kole (a traditional unit of length) in width and length equally. Place the material and then set the conch.
The months of Avani, Aippasi, and the great month of Kartigai,
Are for the long-lived ancients who dwell upon the flower-adorned earth;
Except for these, which dispel the darkness, the others are for the Gods;
In the beautiful portico, one may establish the foundation.
(Meaning:) The three months of Avani mid-August to mid-September, Aippasi mid-October to mid-November, and Kartigai mid-November to mid-December are the months for humans to lay the foundation. All other months are reserved for the Gods.
The earth raised by a crab, the earth from an elephant's tusk,
The earth from a long-standing termite mound, the earth from a deep pond,
And the earth tossed by a bull; gather all these together,
And fashion the casket to hold the powerful "womb" Garbha (the ritual deposit placed under a building).
(Meaning:) Collect soil dug up by a crab, soil from an elephant’s tusk soil stuck to the tusks after an elephant gores the earth, soil from a termite mound, soil from a pond, and soil from a bull’s horns. Mix all these to create the "womb casket."
Fashion the womb-casket with five, seven, or nine divisions,
Or even counting up to fifteen chambers;
Place within them precious jewels, gold, and good varieties of grain,
Firmly packed, as the masters of the arts have commanded.
(Meaning:) Create a casket with five, seven, nine, or fifteen chambers. In the center chamber, place gold and jewelry. In the surrounding chambers, place various types of grain.
Taking the center of the hall and then its width,
Divide it into nine parts; leave four to the West,
From the pure East leave three, from the South leave four,
And from the virtuous North leave three; in that center, place the womb.
(Meaning:) First find the center point of the hall, then the width, and divide the area into nine parts. Leave four parts on the West, three on the East, four on the South, and three on the North. Place the ritual "womb" in the remaining center.
If the architect Silpi (traditional master builder) who knows this science performs these acts, know that it will remove the faults of the house, the faults of the workmanship, and the faults of the land.
