Double the number and add one, then divide that by three and declare the result according to the remainder. If one remains, it is a concern regarding living beings Sanskrit: Jiva-chinta; refers to humans, animals, or spirits. If two remain, it is a concern regarding minerals Sanskrit: Dhatu-chinta; refers to metals, inanimate objects, or money. If zero or three remain, it should be known as a concern regarding roots Sanskrit: Mula-chinta; refers to plants, agriculture, or vegetable matter. This method is as true as the words of the Goddess Saraswati herself. || 38-39 ||
Suppose the desired time Ishta Kala: the specific moment a question is asked of the query is 17 Ghati: a unit of time equal to 24 minutes and 30 Pal: a unit of time equal to 24 seconds. Multiplying this by two gives 35. Adding one makes it 36. Dividing thirty-six by three leaves a remainder of zero. Therefore, according to the rule "know the root when zero remains," one should diagnose a concern regarding roots. Here, if the desired time had been 17 Ghati and 59 Pal, doubling it would yield 35 Ghati and 58 Pal, and adding one would result in 36 Ghati and 58 Pal. Since the division is performed only on the Ghati (hours/units), the remainder would still be zero and the answer would remain the same.
However, if the desired time were 18 Ghati and 0 Pal, then doubling it and adding one would result in the number 37. Dividing this by three leaves a remainder of one; then, according to "one remaining signifies the Moon/Living," one would have to declare a concern regarding living beings.
If facing East, it is a concern of minerals; likewise, in the South, it is living beings.
In the North, one should speak of roots; in the West, the result is mixed. || 40 ||
Prose Order: If the face is toward the East, there is concern for minerals, and likewise in the South for living beings. In the North-facing position, one should speak of roots. In the West, the result (is) mixed. || 40 ||
Commentary: If the seeker asks a question while facing East, then a concern for minerals should be stated, and if facing South, a concern for living beings. Similarly, a North-facing seeker has a concern for roots, but a West-facing seeker has a mixed concern involving minerals, roots, and living beings. The word 'Asya' means the mouth or face. || 40 ||
