Among the Hindu sages, Parasara and Jaimini were the ones who achieved great mastery in JyotishshastraThe traditional Indian system of astronomy and astrology. It was based on the schools of thought established by Parasara that many subsequent authors composed numerous astronomical and astrological texts. Most of Jaimini's works have unfortunately been lost to us. Today, only a rare text titled "Jaimini Sutras" remains in circulation under his name. Two works written by Varahamihira, titled Brihat Jataka and Brihat Samhita, are considered invaluable treasures by scholars of this science. Similarly, the writings of Garga, Satya, Chavya, Devacharya, and Venkatesha are regarded as foundational texts by many practitioners.
Those who have studied this science correctly are capable of accurately and precisely understanding every event destined to happen to an individual from birth until death, as well as all the changing conditions of their life from the moment of their beginning. However, most people practicing as astrologers today have not attained true proficiency or experience in this science. It is a subject that one might not fully master even with a lifetime of effort. Even with the things one has learned, it is not easy for anyone to examine a JatakaA birth chart or horoscope subtly and completely, while correctly synthesizing the various positions of the planets. Most practitioners are only able to conduct a horoscope reading based on the limited things they happen to know. When presented with a horoscope, most do not have the patience to check how accurately it was prepared, or whether errors in time-keeping or mathematical calculations have crept in. Because of all this, it is common for astrologers to make mistakes. Only those astrologers who live for the benefit of the world, basing their lives on pure ideals and serving the Divine constantly, sincerely, and systematically, [can truly succeed].
