In the case of solar or lunar eclipses, if the birth occurs during an eclipsed sunrise Grastodaya: the rising of a celestial body while already eclipsed, the resulting effects will manifest late. If the birth occurs during an eclipsed sunset Grastasta: the setting of a celestial body while still eclipsed, the inauspicious results will occur immediately. Even before the delivery, the mother and others will face difficulties. If the eclipse occurs exactly at midnight or midday, it is considered highly terrifying. In a total eclipse, the inauspicious results are felt in full. In a partial eclipse Khandagrasa: a partial swallowing or eclipse, the ill effects occur in proportion to the degree of the eclipse. (A peace ritual Shanti: a propitiatory rite to neutralize bad omens must be performed for a child born during an eclipse.)

A birth is considered to be in Tithi Gandanta: a "knot" or spiritual danger zone between lunar days if it occurs during the four Ghatikas: a traditional unit of time equal to 24 minutes at the junction of the 5th and 6th lunar days, the 10th and 11th lunar days, the Full Moon and the 1st day of the dark fortnight, or the New Moon and the 1st day of the bright fortnight. This is a harbinger of death. During these Gandanta periods, marriages and journeys should not be undertaken.

If at the time of birth, the specific quarter Charana: one of the four parts of a Nakshatra of the birth star is occupied or "pierced" Viddha: an astrological aspect where a planet 'pierces' or affects a point by a malefic planet, the native will experience great hardship.
Special Note: The Great Sage Chyavana stated that if the birth star is afflicted by an inauspicious planet, one must perform a ritual bath with all-medicinal herbs Sarvaushadhi: a mixture of sacred herbs used for purification and worship the Guru, Brahmins, and the Deities.
