The following is an example of calculating the remaining portion to be traversed Sanskrit: bhogya-sādhya, referring to the portion of a zodiac sign yet to rise above the horizon. In the place of birth, the Sun's position is 7 signs, 30 degrees, and 6 minutes. When added to the precession of the equinoxes Sanskrit: ayana-amśa, the longitudinal difference between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs of 18 degrees and 56 minutes, the result is 12 degrees, 25 minutes, and 56 seconds within the sign of Capricorn. The remaining degrees of this sign are 4 degrees, 4 minutes, and 54 seconds. The rising time Sanskrit: udaya for the sign of Capricorn is 298. This is multiplied by the remaining degrees, resulting in 1211, 122, and 22. When divided by 30 the total degrees in a sign, the "time to be traversed" Sanskrit: bhogya-kāla is 40;22,44. This is subtracted from the desired time Sanskrit: ishta-nāḍī, the time elapsed since sunrise of 12 hours, 18 minutes, and 30 seconds (converted to 732;30 units), leaving a remainder of 692;6,16. Following Capricorn, the rising time of Aquarius is 239; subtracting this from the remainder leaves 452;7,16. Following Aquarius, the rising time of Pisces is 203; subtracting this leaves 259;7,16. Following Pisces, the rising time of Aries is 203; the remainder is—
| Sign | Rising Time | Sign |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 203 | Pisces |
| Taurus | 221 | Aquarius |
| Gemini | 248 | Capricorn |
| Cancer | 248 | Sagittarius |
| Leo | 251 | Scorpio |
| Virgo | 252 | Libra |
—from the remainder, 56;7,16. Following Aries, the rising time of Taurus is 239. Since the remainder 53;27,16 corrected from 56;7,16 cannot be subtracted from this, the remainder 53;7,16 is multiplied by 30, giving 1593;7,28. This is divided by the "undigested" rising time the sign that did not fully rise of 239, yielding 6 degrees, 40 minutes, and 4 seconds. This is added to the signs already fully passed, resulting in 6;40,4. When the precession of 18;56 is subtracted, the Ascendant (Lagna) is determined to be 7 signs, 18 degrees, and 44 minutes. By adding six signs, the Seventh House (Descendant) is found to be 6 signs, 18 degrees, and 44 minutes.
Now, for the example of the Tenth House (Midheaven). Here, we use the rising times at the Equator Sanskrit: lankodaya, literally "rising times at Lanka," the theoretical city on the equator. Midday is 12;44. Subtracting the time elapsed since sunrise (12;18,30) gives a "time before noon" of 0;25,30. This is the desired time.
| Sign | Rising Time | Sign |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 278 | Pisces |
| Taurus | 299 | Aquarius |
| Gemini | 323 | Capricorn |
| Cancer | 323 | Sagittarius |
| Leo | 299 | Scorpio |
| Virgo | 278 | Libra |
Using the equatorial rising times, the degrees of the Sun already traversed are multiplied. The resulting figure is divided by thirty to find the "traversed time," which is 279;14,0. This cannot be subtracted from the time units of 25;30. Therefore, the remainder 25;30 is multiplied by thirty (765) and divided by its own rising time of 323. The result in degrees is 2;22,6. When subtracted from the Sun's position (7 signs, 30 degrees, 6 minutes), the result is 5 signs, 7 degrees, 0 minutes. Adding six signs gives the Fourth House (IC) at 5 signs, 8 degrees, 0 minutes. The difference for the fourth house calculation is 2;16,5,56. By adding the calculated correction of 0;12,48,59,20, the result is the Cusp of the Ascendant at 2;2,3,2. Now—
