...time, to the practical work of interviewing informants and obtaining their personal testimony.
In acknowledging our debts, special mention must be made of Professor W. F. Barrett. He was largely the pioneer of the movement to which we hope this book contributes. The extent of his help, particularly regarding experimental thought-transference original: "Thought-transference"; now more commonly referred to as telepathy, will become clear in the following chapters original: "the sequel". Mr. Malcolm Guthrie, Professor Oliver J. Lodge, and Mr. original: "M."; short for the French "Monsieur" Charles Richet have been very welcome allies in this same branch of the work. Professor Barrett and Mr. Richet have also supplied several of the non-experimental cases in our collection. Mr. F. Y. Edgeworth has provided valuable assistance on points relating to the theory of probability original: "theory of probabilities", a subject in which he is a recognized authority.
Among members of our own Society The Society for Psychical Research, founded in 1882, our warmest thanks go to Miss Porter for her focused, patient, and energetic assistance in every department of the work. Mr. C. C. Massey has given us the benefit of his advice; and Mrs. Walwyn, Mr. Hensleigh Wedgwood, the Reverend A. T. Fryer of Clerkenwell, the Reverend J. A. Macdonald of Rhyl, and Mr. Richard Hodgson have aided us greatly in the collection of evidence. Many other helpers, in this and other countries, must be included in this general expression of gratitude.
Further records of experiences will be most welcome and should be sent to the address listed below.
