...abandoned by wealth, and if [the planets] are in the fourth or other positions, she might suffer the destruction of her husband (widowhood). If it occurs at the end of the night, she will certainly become a widow. Now, the results of the "rising" likely referring to the posture or the act of rising at the time of the event are explained: Rising is of three types, and [in some cases] no son shall be born.
Thus says Narada: "In the twilights, or during an eclipse, the first menses is considered afflicted and inauspicious." Now the author explains the results of the Ascendant Lagna: the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon. The Ascendant of a malefic planet original: "papasyapalagnam" means the sign of a malefic planet is not good. This refers to the signs of the waning Moon, Sun, Saturn, and Mars. Specifically, the signs of Aries, Leo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Aquarius are considered inauspicious. By implication, the others are auspicious. The Ascendant of Cancer is auspicious during the bright half of the month, but in the dark half, it is inauspicious due to the nature of its lord [the Moon]. The results of various Ascendants are stated as follows:
In Aries, she becomes a "slayer of the fetus" original: "bhruunaha," implying miscarriage or infertility and loses her wisdom; in Taurus, she will possess many sons; in Gemini, she will give birth to many daughters; in Cancer, her children may die; in Leo, she suffers widowhood; in Virgo, she will give birth to daughters; in Libra, she will be rich with many sons; in Scorpio, she will be devoted to wicked deeds; in Sagittarius, she will be rich in wealth and sons; in Capricorn, she will be miserable; in Aquarius, she will have offspring only once; and in Pisces, she will have few children.
Narada also says: "Cancer, Taurus, Sagittarius, Pisces, Gemini, Virgo, and Libra are known to be the signs that give auspicious results for the first menses of women." Here too, for the Cancer Ascendant, the specific outcome should be understood based on whether the Moon is a benefic Saumya or malefic Papa at that time.
Now the results of the clothing are explained: Red, old, blue, or multicolored clothing original: "aruna-jarannila-citrambaram" is not auspicious. "Aruna" means reddish; "Jaran" means worn-out or old; "Nila" refers to the well-known blue/dark color; "Citra" means dyed with various colors. Such garments are not good. By implication, firm, white, or yellow garments are auspicious. It is said:
"One wearing new clothes becomes fortunate; one in red clothes becomes sickly. A woman wearing blue cloth becomes a widow [if it is her first menses]; one in yellow cloth is a woman of enjoyment, and one in firm (undamaged) cloth is devoted to her husband. One in old clothes is unfortunate, while one in beautiful clothes is blessed." Other details regarding the avoidance of specific periods should be considered from the relevant chapters.
In the event that the menses occurs at an inauspicious time according to these results, a sacrifice original: "yajana" should be performed using sesame, ghee, and offerings to the gods.
The sacrifice should be performed with the Gayatri Mantra, following the prescribed number of steps, offering 108 oblations of unbroken rice, sesame, and ghee. One should also donate gold, wheat, and oil according to their capacity. 1. Thus ends the chapter on the first menses.
3. Now, the general strength of the Ascendant is described according to the Svarayodutta: Generally, for rituals such as conception Garbhadhana which will be discussed later, one should avoid the Moon when it is in the 8th, 6th, or the Ascendant itself. This means avoiding the 12th, the well-known 8th, the 6th (the enemy house), and the 1st (the body/Ascendant). Similarly, avoid the portion of the sign original: "bhvamshako" belonging to the lords of the "deadly" portions. This refers to the degrees of the Ascendant that fall into inauspicious divisions. Furthermore, avoid the degrees of malefics original: "khalamsham", such as those belonging to the cruel planets or the Moon when it is in its waning/malefic phase.
Generally, avoid the Moon in the 8th, 6th, or Ascendant; avoid the degrees of the lords of death, the degrees of the Sun, or malefics at the end of a sign.
The benefics in the center (1, 4, 7, 10) or trines (5, 9) are praised. The other planets are good in the 6th, 11th, and 3rd houses. All of these should be considered while avoiding the specific faults mentioned in the chapter on prohibitions. 2.
Thus ends the section on the general strength of the Ascendant. In any Ascendant, avoid the Navamsha (ninth-part) of a malefic planet. Also, avoid a planet in the house of death—meaning, avoid a planet in the 8th house from the Ascendant. Also avoid [the lords of] the sign of death or the sign of birth if they are in the Ascendant. Chapter 3 This means if the lord of the 8th house or the lord of the birth sign is positioned in the Ascendant, it should be avoided. Regarding the movement of the planets: Benefics original: "saumyah" are the auspicious planets. The "centers" Kendras are the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses. The "trines" Trikonas are the 9th and 5th houses. Benefic planets in these houses are highly praised. Other planets (malefics) are good in the 6th, 11th, and 3rd houses.
