The eleventh house original: "Bhava", the third house original: "Sahaja", and the sixth—in these positions, other planets should be placed. In these specific places, even the malefic planets are considered praiseworthy. This rule should be applied everywhere, as it is stated in the verses for all planetary actions due to its general applicability. What should be done first? One should understand the specific details taught in this section. First, one learns the specifics 3; thus ends the section on the General Strength of the Ascendant (Lagna) 3.
Now, the author addresses the rite of conception original: "Garbhadhana" along with the planetary conditions. He says: "O seeker of a son! In the fertile season, being well-disposed, go unto your own wife." The connection is that one should go. One who desires a son is a "seeker of a son" original: "sutarthi"; this is an address to him. O seeker of a son! The "fertile season" Ritu: the period of sixteen nights starting from the first appearance of the menses is when this should occur. One who is filled with "good joy" original: "suditah" should go unto his wife—
Avoid the first four nights, uneven days, the junctions of time, and days of ancestral offerings. Abandon the Nakshatras of Mula, Magha, and the last sign. Avoid the eighth and fourteenth days of the lunar fortnight, your birth star, and the twilights. Go [to her] when Jupiter, the Sun, and the Moon are in the Ascendant, in odd signs and divisions, O seeker of a son. Conversely, O seeker of a daughter, go on even days when the Moon is in even signs. 1 meaning: because the woman carries the womb
Here, the woman must also be joyful. The natural fertile season original: "Ritu" of women is considered to be sixteen nights. What should be avoided? One must avoid the "first four nights" original: "pragnit-catushka", "uneven days" original: "asama-dina", and "junctions" original: "vivarana". Junctions refer to the transitions between day and night, or between lunar dates original: "tithis" and asterisms original: "nakshatras". "Ancestral offerings" original: "shraddha" refers to the day of a funeral offering or the day preceding it; these days should be abandoned. Similarly, one must avoid Mula and Magha two specific constellations considered sharp or fierce, and the "last" original: "antya" which refers to the constellation Revati. These must be abandoned.
Furthermore, one must avoid the "year-eight" original: "vasatkali", which refers to the eighth day of the year/month, the "Kali-fourteenth" the 14th day of the dark fortnight, the "birth star" original: "janibha" or the constellation under which one was born, and the daytime. Likewise, the "junction days" original: "parvani" must be avoided. These junctions include the New Moon Amavasya, the Full Moon Purnima, and specific astrological disturbances like Vyatipata, Vaidhriti, and the entry of the Sun into a new sign Sankranti. One should go to his wife only after avoiding these.
As the sage Narada says: "From the appearance of the menses, women are considered untouchable for four days; then they are purified for these rites. This is the rule for all classes." The sage Vasishtha also states: "One should avoid union during eclipses, the Vaidhriti and Vyatipata disturbances, the Vishti period, the first part of malefic asterisms, the twilights, and during the mourning period for parents." On even-numbered days and with the astrological combinations to be described, a seeker of a son should approach his virtuous wife. On odd-numbered days, a seeker of a daughter should do so, while avoiding the "joints" Ganda and the junctions of lunar dates.
In the auspicious house, when Jupiter original: "Ijya", the Sun original: "Arka", and the Moon original: "Indu" are in the Ascendant Lagna in odd signs and divisions original: "vishamabhalavargai". "Bha" means the zodiac sign and "lavana" means the divisional sign Navamsha. This means they should be situated in an odd-numbered sign and an odd-numbered ninth-part division. Not only should they be in odd divisions, but they should also possess "excellent strength" original: "rudulla".
Now, the specific rule for one desiring a daughter is given: "O seeker of a daughter!" In this same time described above, but on even days original: "ayugahani", being joyful, go unto your wife. With what conditions? With the opposite original: "vyasaih" of the previously mentioned ones. That is, with Jupiter, the Sun, and the Moon in the Ascendant in even signs and even divisions. As stated in the Brihat Jataka: "If the Ascendant, the Sun, and the Moon are powerful in male signs and odd divisions, one should predict the birth of a male; in even divisions, a female."
