One Hundred Verses on Astrology

It is said that a favorable outcome arises from the Ascendant Lagna; the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the time of the wedding or from the birth sign. In the same way, one must avoid the Scissor configuration Kartari; an astrological flaw where a planet or house is "sandwiched" between two malefic planets affecting either the Ascendant or the Moon original: "Chandra". This configuration occurs when malefic planets occupy the second and twelfth houses from the sign in question. This "Great Scissor" configuration leads to the destruction of wealth and causes great sorrow.

The Moon original: "Shitanshu" is said to be auspicious in the third, eleventh, or tenth houses. Mercury original: "Budha" is favorable in the eleventh house. Benefic planets original: "Saumya" should not be in the seventh, eighth, or twelfth houses. Venus original: "Bhrugu" is favorable in the eleventh, and Jupiter original: "Jiva" is favorable in the eleventh or tenth. Others say malefic planets are auspicious in the third, sixth, or eleventh houses. Mars original: "Bhauma" in the eighth house is particularly unfavorable. ॥ 52 ॥

Now the strength of the Ascendant for marriage is described. The second, third, and eleventh houses from the Ascendant are considered strong. For a marriage Ascendant, the Moon should not be in the fourth, eighth, or twelfth houses. Similarly, benefic planets in the seventh, eighth, or twelfth houses do not grant good results. A benefic planet is favorable in the third or eleventh. Mercury and Venus are auspicious in the twelfth house, while Jupiter is not considered favorable in the twelfth by some authorities. Malefic planets in the third, sixth, and eleventh houses give good results, but Mars in the eighth is undesirable.

If the Sun original: "Arka" or Mars original: "Kuja" are joined by Venus original: "Sita", or if benefics are in friendly signs, or if the Moon is in the sixth or eighth house, or if the Sun is in the seventh—these are generally avoided. Similarly, Rahu Rahu; the north node of the moon, considered a shadow planet in the Ascendant is considered undesirable in marriage rituals. One should calculate the specific portion of the sign Navamsha; a one-ninth division of a zodiac sign to ensure it is favorable.

॥ 53 ॥ The Sun, Rahu, and Mars in the eighth house bring death original: "mrityuda". Similarly, benefics in the eighth house, the Moon in the sixth or eighth, or the Sun in the seventh should be avoided. The Purity of the Rising and Setting Udayasta Shuddhi is now described. When the lord of the Ascendant sign aspects or is joined with the Ascendant, it brings auspiciousness to the groom. Similarly, the seventh house represents the bride; if the seventh house is aspected or joined by its own lord, it brings auspiciousness to the bride. Alternatively, if the lord of the divisional portion aspects the Ascendant, it results in a favorable name and fame.

Planetary Aspects Drishti are now described. From the sign where they are stationed, all planets look at the third and tenth houses with a quarter-glance. They look at the ninth and fifth houses with a half-glance. They look at the fourth and eighth houses with a three-quarter glance. And they look at the seventh house with a full glance original: "purna-drishti". Jupiter original: "Guru" specifically looks at the fifth and ninth with a full glance. Mars original: "Kuja" looks at the fourth and eighth with a full glance.

Marriage is not desired when Jupiter is in the sign of Leo original: "Simha". Similarly, when in Capricorn.
