...with the intended number of offerings for the attendant deities. For the primary deities, one-tenth of the total offerings are made. For the deities who ensure the ritual's perfection—Om Vinayaka Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, Durga, the Guardian of the Field Kshetrapala, Wind Vayu, Space Akasha, and the Ashvins The twin celestial physicians. For the deities who protect the sacrifice—Indra, Agni, Yama, Nirriti, Varuna, Vayu, Kubera, and Ishana—one-twentieth of the total offerings are made to Agni, Vayu, Surya, and Prajapati The Lord of Progeny using sesame and rice in the specified numbers.
For the Sun Surya, thirteen offerings of clarified butter are made; for Agni, thirty-four offerings; for Rudra, thirty offerings. Having performed the final offering to the Fire Svishtakrit and the concluding rites up to the declaration of intent, one recites: Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah The Great Utterance, referring to the Earth, Atmosphere, and Heavens. Having invoked the Golden Womb Hiranyagarbha, one performs the formal renunciation of the offering by saying: "This is for the Lord of Progeny, it is not mine" original: "Prajapataya idam na mama".
Then, moving outside, from the binding of the sacrificial grass to the placement of the two portions of clarified butter, one should take the common prepared food, sesame, and rice, mixed with clarified butter. Having separated the vessels, placed them over the fire, and drizzled them with the small ladle sruva, one should lift them. To the south of the clarified butter—
—having placed it on the sacrificial grass, drizzled it from behind, and performed the rites up to the main butter offerings, one invokes the forty-one deities in order, from the Sun to Ishana. Following the instructions for invocation, one should offer the prescribed number of oblations of fuel-sticks, cooked food, and clarified butter using their respective mantras.
The method is as follows:
One should take the fuel-stick samidha, leaving two finger-widths from the root, holding it with the middle finger, ring finger, and thumb, and then offer it. This is done similarly to the way one holds a water vessel. The clarified butter is offered with the small ladle sruva, or in its absence, with a leaf from the sacred fig tree ashvattha.
Then, using the divided and combined mystical utterances vyahritis, one should offer the mixture of unbroken grain, sesame, and rice. One should offer to the Sun, the Purifying Fire, and Rudra with food and clarified butter while reciting the mantras. Those mantras are as follows: "May the Sun protect us from the day..." original: "Suryo no divas patu..." This is the five-verse hymn composed by Arka, the son of the Sun, in the Gayatri meter, used for the primary offerings to the planets. Om, may the Sun protect us from the day; may the Wind protect us from the atmosphere; may the Fire protect us from earthly harms. O Generator, may your heat, which deserves everything, be pleased with us. Protect us from the falling lightning. Let the God not fail us...
