The "Swan" (Hansa) is a central metaphor in yogic breathing. The sound of the breath is said to make the sound "Ham" when exhaling and "Sa" when inhaling, meaning "I am He" (Aham Sah). The swan also symbolizes the soul's ability to discriminate between the eternal and the transient.
