Upon learning original: budhatv or buddhvā; referring to the moment one becomes aware that an eclipse is occurring, one should bathe with water; so says Vijnanesvara The 11th-century author of the Mitākṣarā, one of the most influential legal commentaries in Hindu history. In this matter, even if the usual ritual impurities referring to vṛddhi or kṣaya, periods of ritual impurity caused by births or deaths in the family are absent, one must bathe and perform the Shraddha Shraddha: a sacred ritual involving offerings to deceased ancestors to ensure their journey in the afterlife and other rites; so say Madhava and Kamalakara Author of the Nirṇayasindhu, a famous 17th-century guide for religious life.
If the annual ancestral rite Pratyabdika-shraddha; the anniversary of a parent's death falls on that same day, one should perform it using the prescribed food or with uncooked grain original: āma; when full cooking is prohibited by ritual timing, raw grains are offered instead. The Shraddha performed specifically because of an eclipse Grahana: the "seizing" of the sun or moon does not satisfy the requirements for the New Moon ancestral rite or other regular observances.

Now follows the Decision on Solar Ingresses Sankranti: the transition of the sun from one zodiac sign to the next, considered a highly auspicious time for bathing and charity:
At the Aries Mesha ingress, [the sacred time] is 10 nadis A traditional unit of time; 1 nadi (or ghatika) is approximately 24 minutes before and 10 after.
In Taurus Vrisha, the 16 [nadis] prior are sacred.
In Gemini Mithuna, the 16 [nadis] following are sacred.

If the annual ancestral rite falls on that day, one should perform it with the food indicated for that purpose or with uncooked grain. The Shraddha performed on account of an eclipse does not fulfill the requirements for the New Moon Shraddha or other regular rites.
