This volume is presented in a traditional half-binding featuring a leather spine and protective leather corners in brown. The front and back boards are covered in decorative marbled paper with a dark teal pattern.
A half-binding is a technique where leather is used only on the parts of the book most prone to wear—the spine and the corners—while the rest is covered in less expensive material like paper. This was a common way to balance durability and cost.
The marbled paper seen here was likely produced by floating pigments on a chemically prepared liquid (size) and "combing" them into patterns before dipping the paper onto the surface.
