TO MR. RENÉ BASSET, René Basset (1855–1924) was a pioneering French orientalist and polyglot who served as a foundational figure in the study of Berber and Arabic linguistics and literature.

DIRECTOR OF THE ALGIERS HIGHER SCHOOL OF LETTERS The École supérieure des lettres d’Alger was a major academic center in colonial Algeria, later becoming the Faculty of Letters of the University of Algiers.

EDMOND DOUTTÉ. Edmond Doutté (1867–1926) was a student of Basset and a renowned sociologist and ethnographer known for his studies of North African religious practices.
