Birth Ornament 9
Commentary 9
...regarding the birth of offspring original: santāna, there may be a slight delay original: vilamba. This delay occurs depending on the strength of the Major and Minor Planetary Periods Mahā-daśā and Antar-daśā: Time cycles in Indian astrology where specific planets exert primary influence over a person's life of benefic planets. This is the intended meaning.
Now, if the Moon original: Candra is in the Fifth House the house traditionally associated with children in the sign of Cancer original: Karka, then the person will have female offspring, or perhaps a limited number of children—he will have few progeny.
Furthermore, if a Malefic Krūra: A "cruel" or harsh planet like Mars or Saturn is situated in the fifth house from Jupiter original: Bṛhaj-jīva, and Jupiter himself is in the fifth house from the Ascendant Lagna: The sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth, then there is a loss of offspring; the person may be childless.
However, if Saturn original: Chāyāputra, literally "Son of the Shadow" is in the fifth house from his own sign, then there will be one son. Here, the hidden meaning is that if Saturn—acting as a benefic—casts a full aspect original: dṛṣṭi, an astrological "gaze" or influence on the house of children from his own sign, it creates a combination for many sons. Similarly, what need is there to say that there will be only one son if the Sun original: Ravi or Mars original: Bhauma are in the fifth from their own signs? This is the underlying intent. || 13 ||
Now he explains other combinations. In the fifth house, if Saturn original: Chāyā-sūnu is in Aquarius original: Kumbha, then there will be five sons. If he is in Capricorn original: Makara, there will be three daughters; the intent here is because Capricorn is a Feminine Sign original: strī-rāśi.
By extension, if Mars original: Bhauma is in Capricorn in the fifth, there will be three sons. Now, Mercury original: Rohiṇeya, literally "Son of the Star Rohini" in the fifth house is a "giver of daughters." In this same way, Venus original: Kāvya, "The Poet" and the Moon in the fifth house also give daughters.
Furthermore, if Jupiter original: Guru is in the fifth house alone—meaning not joined by other planets—there will be five sons. If either Ketu or Rahu the lunar nodes, or "shadow planets" are in the fifth house in Aries original: Kriya, Taurus original: Vṛṣabha, or Cancer original: Karka, there is no delay; this means there is no obstruction to the birth of offspring.
By the phrase "no delay," it is suggested that if the Lords of the Fifth are in signs other than Capricorn or Aquarius, or if Mars is in signs other than Capricorn, or if Rahu or Ketu are in the fifth house in signs other than Aries and the others mentioned, then a delay will certainly occur. || 14
