A traveler in traditional Japanese garb, wearing a wide straw hat and grasping a walking stick, is shown laboriously climbing the macabre incline. Higher up, standing amidst the skulls, is a Buddhist monk or celestial figure with a radiant halo around his head. He wears flowing robes and holds a shakujō (ringed staff). The background and foreground transition into soft, misty clouds. On the right side of the illustration, there are vertical Japanese characters "玉秀" (Gyokushū) followed by a red artist's seal.
