If there should be a solar transit saṅkrānti The moment the sun enters a new zodiac sign and an eclipse graha occurring on the full moon parvan of the month of Shravana A lunar month typically falling in July-August, sacred for the commencement of Vedic studies, then the Commencement of Vedic Study upākaraṇa should be held on the fifth day of the bright fortnight śukla-pakṣa of that same Shravana month. ॥1॥
Whenever a solar transit or an eclipse occurs in that month, the ritual commencement upākṛti must be performed on the fifth day by the followers of the Vajasaneyi school vājasaneyin The branch of the White Yajurveda traditionally attributed to the sage Yajnavalkya. ॥2॥
If a solar transit or an eclipse happens to occur on the full moon day viṣṭa-parvan, then it is desired that the ritual be held on the fifth day of that month when it is joined with the lunar mansion of Hasta hasta-yuktāyām Hasta is an auspicious constellation often associated with the hand; its presence is a key timing requirement for certain schools. 3.
When the full moon day is joined with the specific qualities of the Hasta constellation, the ritual upakriyā should take place... distress?... the stars are eclipsed on this day... result?
