The seventeenth [unit of time] is when one should perform pacification rituals Shantik Karma ceremonies performed to avert calamity or balance spiritual energies. One must always remain free from the ten ancestral rites Pitru Karma rituals dedicated to deceased ancestors, generally considered inauspicious for celebratory events like weddings; do not perform other rituals unless the timing is known to be auspicious and joyful. Those lunar days Tithi that are even-numbered original: sugma are considered favorable, whereas the "holes" original: randhra; referring to the 4th, 9th, and 14th lunar days which are often avoided should be omitted. Except for the ninth Navami day, the sages have declared these times suitable, with the tenth Dashami being particularly carried forth as auspicious. ॥ 10 ॥

On the second lunar day Dvitiya, when the sun alternates positions, or when the moon resides in the sign of Sagittarius Dhanu or Pisces original: saphara; literally 'the large fish'...
