original: "ॐ श्रीगणेशाय नमः" (Om Sri Ganeshaya Namah). It is customary in Sanskrit manuscripts to begin with an invocation to Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity who removes obstacles, to ensure the successful completion of the work.
Now begins the writing of The Ornament of Nativities Jatakabharanam; a classic Sanskrit treatise on predictive astrology focusing on the moment of birth.
I always find the lotus-feet of the Bestower of Prosperity—who grants all boons—within the lotus of my heart. By the mere remembrance of Him, even a person of dull intellect becomes worthy of being honored by the gods. 1
The great-minded Sri Dhundhiraja, whose face is as pleasant as the king of elephants, performs this work for the sake of the virtuous, seeking to create a meaningful gathering of knowledge through his efforts. 2
Having meditated with deep devotion in my mind upon the lotus feet of my Guru, Jnanaraja, I now compose this work titled The Ornament of Nativities, specifically the section concerning the positions and influences of the planets in a birth chart Jataka Graha Khandam; the portion of the text dealing with planetary cycles and their effects on an individual. 3
One who is skilled in this science makes their name foremost in the world. To ensure that the mind does not become weary or confused, I apply myself to this work of horoscopy for the benefit of all. 4
For those who take delight in the preparation of diverse and complex birth charts, this work is revealed to be capable of providing the proper sequence of writing without excessive labor. Therefore, its name—The Ornament of Nativities—is truly fitting and meaningful. 5
In the beginning, verses filled with auspicious words are always held in high regard. Therefore, let those who are skilled in the art of preparing birth charts first write these verses, which bring about well-being and success. 6
