...[the aforementioned times] should be avoided. Regarding the transit of Jupiter through the sign of Leo, Shaunaka An ancient sage and author of Vedic and astrological treatises. and his followers state: When Jupiter original: "Jiva" resides in Leo, one should strictly avoid performing auspicious rites such as investiture with the sacred thread original: "vratabandha"; the OCR reads "vratavedha," likely a transcription error for the initiation ceremony for young students., marriage, and other such ceremonies.
Vasistha One of the most revered Vedic seers and a primary authority on law and astrology. declares:
On the northern bank of the Bhagirathi The river Ganges. and the southern bank of the Gautami The river Godavari., one should not perform a marriage or an investiture while Jupiter is in Leo, until it rises [in another sign].
Whether it be bathing at a holy pilgrimage site, a marriage, the consecration of a temple, or a religious vow, these are forbidden while the Preceptor of the Gods term: Suraguru (an epithet for the planet Jupiter) is in Leo or Capricorn, or when the planet is in accelerated motion, or when it is combust term: asta (when a planet is too close to the sun to be seen, losing its auspicious power). This is the opinion stated by the sages Vyasa and Vasistha.
According to the Jyotirnibandha A significant 16th-century compendium of light/astrology.:
When the Sun is in Aries and Jupiter is in Leo, marriage and investiture are permitted for those who live in the region within the Vindhya mountains.
In the Rajamartanda An influential 11th-century work attributed to King Bhoja.:
When Jupiter resides in the sign of Leo, there is no fault for those on the northern bank of the Narmada river; however, the prohibition remains in effect for the southern region.
Vasistha further warns:
When Jupiter is specifically in the Leo navamsa term: navamsa (a one-ninth sub-division of a zodiac sign; here referring to the most "Leo-intense" part of Leo) of the sign of Leo, this creates a combination known as Kalamrutyu original: "Time of Death". This specific timing is certain to bring destruction to wives.
Now, the remedies based on the strength of the time: Shaunaka and others state that one may perform auspicious acts even if Jupiter is in Leo, provided the Sun has entered Aries.
Furthermore, there is no fault [regarding Jupiter in Leo] in the regions east of the Narmada, north and south of the Sone river, and on the western bank of the Gandaki river.
According to the Jyotirnibandha:
A man who desires long life should not perform investiture, marriage, starting the construction of a house, or other merit-making deeds, nor should he set out on a journey [during an inauspicious transit].
Regarding the faults of the intercalary month term: Malamaasa (an extra month added to the lunar calendar to keep it in sync with the solar seasons, considered spiritually "unclean" for major life events), the sage Marichi says:
One should not perform a house-warming, the gifting of cows, the first hair-cutting of a child, or any great festival during an intercalary month...
