In the rite of Commencement of Studies original: Vidyarambha, the planets Jupiter, Mercury, and the Moon are considered auspicious. One should avoid the influence of Mars and Saturn. Regarding the specific combination of Mercury and the Moon, it is stated in the text Dipika A significant astrological treatise that the Teacher of Astrology referring to the planet Jupiter, the Moon, and the Sun must be in a state of peace/propitiation.
The study of the sciences should begin under the "Fixed" asterisms original: dhruva-nakshatra, as well as those associated with Vasuhari, Mula, and Akshi. In the Shripati-paddhati A classic work by the astronomer Shripati, it is taught that the asterisms starting with Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha, Revati, and Ashwini are the most beneficial. The three "Eastern" stars the Purvas: Purva Phalguni, Purvashada, and Purvabhadrapada and Shravana are also considered auspicious for the successful beginning of learning.
Now, regarding the Sacred Thread Ceremony term: Upanayana (the initiation ritual where a young boy is invested with a sacred thread and begins formal Vedic education), the text Rajamartanda A work attributed to King Bhoja states:
The strength of the Sun original: Surya-bala is of the highest importance. For all classes, the combined strength of Jupiter, the Moon, and the Sun is the best foundation for religious vows. According to the opinion of expert astrologers, the ritual should not be performed when these planets are weak. For the "best of the twice-born" original: dvija-pungavanam; referring to the Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas, the month of Chaitra March-April is praised as particularly auspicious.
The alignment of the "vocal sounds" original: svara and the planets must be carefully calculated by the Guru (teacher) with great effort. The success of the initiation depends on the planetary strength of both the Teacher and the Disciple.
The Sage Narada's View
The sage Narada declares: The initiation should take place in the eighth year from conception or the eighth year from birth. However, there are specific ages based on the desired outcome:
Purification of the Months according to Vasishtha
The sage Vasishtha states: For Brahmins, the initiation should ideally occur in the Springtime original: Vasanta. For the other classes, the Summer original: Grishma or the Cool Season original: Shishira are suitable. There are five months that are generally considered common or acceptable for all.
Auspicious Lunar Days
Regarding the selection of the Lunar Day term: Tithi (a lunar day in the Hindu calendar) for the rise of good fortune: the second, third, fifth, tenth, sixth, and eleventh lunar days are considered favorable for this ritual.
