I bow to Lord Shiva, who is like the sun original: Shiva-bhāskaram, who lifts those submerged in the darkness of delusion using the rays of knowledge. Seated upon the peak of Mount Kailasa the sacred Himalayan mountain regarded as the home of Shiva, the God of gods, the Great Lord Maheshwara, is surrounded by celestial attendants and perfected beings Ganas and Siddhas, and served by assemblies of sages. Seated there with him, the Goddess Parvati, the beloved of her husband, questioned the Supreme Lord for the benefit of the world.
The Goddess said:
O Lord, God of gods, you who wear the crescent moon in your hair, tell me the supreme knowledge with clear meaning, O Great Lord. Speak of the Swarodaya literally "the rising of the breath"; a system of divination and spiritual practice based on the flow of air through the nostrils, the ultimate secret which is difficult even for sages to obtain. O Lord, you have spoken of this before for mortals of limited intellect; now tell it to me both in detail and concisely, O Supreme Lord.
Explain the science of the five paths referring to the five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and ether, the rising of the breath, vowels, and planets, combined with the signs of the zodiac and the assessment of strength and weakness. Reveal the auspicious and inauspicious through the differences of types and the lords of the planets. Speak of gain and loss, happiness and sorrow, life and death, victory and defeat, and of coming and going, O Lord.
