Many lines [on the palm] indicate poverty. 18
He in whose middle section of the thumb a barley-corn yava: a grain-shaped mark on the thumb, traditionally considered a primary indicator of wealth and food security shines, that man enjoys the wealth he has earned original: "utpannaṃ bhukta bhojī" — implying one who is self-made and lives comfortably and thrives in happiness. 19
Those with moderate [physical traits] gain fame and prowess original: "vikrama" and are similarly happy. If the lines are glossy and joyful here, but a short life should be indicated [if other specific defects are present]. 21
Those with large hands, a jaw like a lion's, dark-hued feet and belly, and fine, strong arms—these men, O Brahman original: "vipra" — a respectful address to a learned priest or scholar, shall have a long life. 22
1. Henceforth, I shall describe the characteristics of the individual body parts,
starting from the toenails, according to the teachings of the All-Knowing One original: "sarvajña" — likely referring to the deity or sage who founded this system of knowledge. 23
5 The soles of the feet should be free of sweat, and the toes should be glossy, well-proportioned original: "karmanvito" — literally "endowed with action," implying a healthy, functional shape, and soft.
