In the "workshops" of this field of study, there still lie many unshaped blocks of stone that may perhaps forever resist being carved. However, under the diligent chisel, many forms have become visible. From their features, distant eras and the past lives of a strange people look down at us—a people who are related to us, yet whose customs are so different from our own in every way.

We will attempt to describe, or at least outline, the problems this science encountered, its goals, and the successes it achieved in solving difficult questions.
