Salutations to the glorious Ganesha original: Śrī-Gaṇeśāya namaḥ; Ganesha is the elephant-headed deity traditionally invoked at the start of any venture to remove obstacles

Now begins the Determination of the Victory of Kings original: Rājavijaya-nirṇaya

Having bowed to Him, the Creator Brahma joyfully creates the entire world; having bowed to Him, Vishnu protects it—I bow to that all-pervading Lord Shiva original: Śaṅkara. || 1 ||

Having bowed to Shiva, the Lord of the Universe and the cause of the world’s origin, I shall compose the work named The Victory of Kings according to the prescribed rules. || 2 ||

Here, indeed, with the desire for the welfare of all the world, a certain learned scholar, wishing to compose the book named The Victory of Kings, first describes the purification of the Five Limbs of the calendar for the successful accomplishment of desired goals.

The lunar day, the day of the week, the lunar mansion, the solar-lunar junction, and the "half-day" or division—these are declared to be the Five Limbs original: tithi, vāra, nakṣatra, yoga, and karaṇa to be considered for all undertakings. || 3 ||
