In whichever cell koṣṭha: a square or compartment in a divination grid the first letter of a name is placed, its similar-sounding letters original: "savarṇa" are also considered to belong there. This includes conjunct characters and those that are repeated; at the end of the cell, one should reflect upon them in this manner. (7)
In the first five cells, one should place Mars original: "Dvitija", Mercury original: "Vid", Jupiter original: "Ijya", Saturn original: "Arkaputra", and Saturn original: "Arkaja" again. Then, the Sun original: "Dineśa" and the Moon original: "Śītakiraṇa" follow. Again, in two more cells, the Zodiac signs original: "rāśīnyathākramenā" should be known in their proper sequence. This system, known for its auspicious results, was spoken by Shri Shubhasha likely the author or an authority cited: Śrī Śubhaśāsa. The first group is said to consist of sixteen vowels. The groups beginning with 'Ka' are five-fold, each containing five letters, as declared by the ancient sages. 3
Having determined the value of the name's letters, one should divide by five. Based on the remainder original: "aṅkaśeṣato", the wise one should announce the results. (10) By the vowels of the zodiac signs, the first nine-fold divisions navāṃśa: a one-ninth division of a zodiac sign used in Vedic astrology are determined; for the remaining parts, the Moon, the Sun, and others are used. In this way, by the division of the name into nine parts, the five vowels become the lords. The stars beginning with Revati the 27th Nakshatra are grouped in fives, following the order of Punarvasu the 7th Nakshatra. The Sound of the Star original: "uḍusvara" is declared by the greatest of sages through the vowels. By the combination of the vital breaths prāṇa: in phonetics, this refers to the aspiration or 'breath-force' of a letter, the weight of the syllables, and the vowels, the "Ready Sound" original: "sajjasvara" is formed in the sixth group. Thus, the total perfection of sounds is achieved. The union of these sounds must be accomplished through natural reasoning. (13)
One should determine the vowels sequentially according to their duration. These natural sounds, which are well-known, are like the signs of the birth-constellation. In the combination of vowels, one should achieve success through the power of the first letter. These verses original: "gāthā" apply even in other lands. (14)
Thus ends the Calculation of Natural Vowels
For the delight of one's own people and the King's wife, and to illuminate auspicious results, I now state the Measurement of Time original: "kālamānam" for the sake of the virtuous. (15) Having understood the mean motion madhyama-mata: the calculation of planetary positions based on average speed rather than true observation, consisting of years, months, days, and minutes, one should calculate the "corrected" year with precise instruments. (16)
Subtracting the years by the three-fold actions, and multiplying by the "eyes of the kings" cryptic numerical notation, possibly 216, then multiplying by 163 and dividing by 877... the resulting remainder is 49 and the divisor is 80.
