Om! Auspiciousness! Salutations to the illustrious Ganesha. Om! I bow my head to the blissful Supreme Shiva, joined with the daughter of the mountain Parvati, who grants the desires of his devotees; who is the pure source of the gods' thoughts and provides every success. I bow to the Guru who possesses the face of the Lord of Elephants Ganesha and who, like a mother, provides support and light; I bow to the illustrious Guru named Matanga.
This science was proclaimed by the illustrious Garga, Vasistha, Shaunaka, Shuka, Vyasa, and others, through the dialogue between Shiva and Parvati which removes all obstacles. This work, the Varaha-dashaka-mani original: "Varahadashakamani", likely referring to the works of the astronomer-astrologer Varahamihira, is expanded by its own majesty and wealth. Taking the essence of those works, the illustrious Khanjaraja, through his own intellect, now composes this work in gentle words. 3.
Khanjaraja, for the playful delight of the wise and for the benefit of students, creates this essence of horoscopy Hora: the branch of astrology dealing with individual birth charts and timing called the "Illumination of Day and Night" original: "Ahoratra Prakasham" based on the teachings of the masters of horoscopy. 4.
The Praise of the Science of Astrology
This science is four-fold in its application, yet when understood through proper method, it is known as the "Three Branches" Skandha Traya: the three divisions of Indian astrology consisting of Ganita (mathematics), Hora (horoscopy), and Samhita (mundane/practical astrology). All of this was spoken clearly by me, following the teachings of the Western/Roman schools original: "Romake", referring to the Romaka Siddhanta which shows Greco-Roman influence on Indian astronomy, which is supreme and should be seen by all. 5.
The first system is the Brahma-Siddhanta, then the Soma-Siddhanta; the seventh science spoken of is the auspicious one. Others were placed by the wise: the Brahma, the Surya The Sun-based system, the Soma being the third. 6. The Vasistha, the Paulisha, the Romasha, and the Parashara—these are the seven proclaimed systems Siddhanta: comprehensive astronomical treatises that form the basis for calendar making and predictions, appearing in various forms both manifest and unmanifest.
The Characteristics of an Astrologer
One who is truly capable of crossing the ocean of the science of horoscopy; who is proficient in horoscopy, mathematics Ganita, and algebra Bija-ganita; whose mind is fixed on dharma and destiny; who can explain the clear proofs of the astronomical systems through various methods; who is skilled in the geometry of the celestial sphere Gola—such a person is fit to give predictions. 8.
Just as food is not enjoyable without salt/blessing?, and just as a king's kingdom does not shine without a learned priest, so too does a kingdom not shine at all without the presence of an astrologer...
