This section defines the specific degrees within signs where planets are exceptionally strong, a concept known as Moolatrikona.
The portions are as follows: Thirteen, ten, three, twenty-eight, fifteen, five, and twenty. In the sign of Leo, the Sun’s power zone extends to twenty degrees. In Taurus, the Moon occupies the trine after the first three degrees. For Aries, the first twelve degrees belong to Mars. In Virgo, the trine of Mercury is at fifteen degrees. For Sagittarius, the first ten degrees are Jupiter's zone. In Libra, the first five degrees are for Venus, and for Aquarius, the first twenty degrees belong to Saturn. The remaining portions of these signs are considered the planets' own houses.
In Jyotisha, planets are not isolated; they have inherent "social" relationships—friendship, neutrality, or enmity—which affect how they interpret a birth chart.
The natural relationships as taught by the Jataka-shastra-vidbhih original: "those who know the science of birth-horoscopy" are summarized here:
| Planet | Friends | Neutral | Enemies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Moon, Mars, Jupiter | Mercury | Venus, Saturn |
| Moon | Sun, Mercury | Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn | None |
| Mars | Sun, Moon, Jupiter | Venus, Saturn | Mercury |
| Mercury | Sun, Venus | Mars, Jupiter, Saturn | Moon |
| Jupiter | Sun, Moon, Mars | Saturn | Mercury, Venus |
| Venus | Mercury, Saturn | Mars, Jupiter | Sun, Moon |
| Saturn | Mercury, Venus | Jupiter | Sun, Moon, Mars |
The Tatkalika temporary or situational friendships are determined by the current positions of the planets in the sky. If planets are located in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, or 12th houses from one another, they act as temporary friends. Otherwise, they are temporary enemies. By combining the natural (Nisarga) and temporary relationships, a wise astrologer determines the five-fold bond: Great Friend, Friend, Neutral, Enemy, and Great Enemy. 23-24.
Planets also gain strength based on the direction they face and the time of day:
