|| Salutations to the Illustrious Ganesha || The Sage spoke: ||
original: "श्रीगणेशाय नमः" (Śrī-Gaṇeśāya namaḥ). A traditional invocation to the elephant-headed deity Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, used to begin Hindu texts. "The Sage spoke" indicates the text is a dialogue, likely between the sage Lomasha and his disciple.
The enemy's sign, the neutral sign, the friend's sign, as well as one's own house and the position of exaltation—their strength increases respectively in this order. || 1 ||
The text describes the hierarchy of planetary strength based on their zodiacal placement. A kheṭa (planet) is weakest in an enemy’s sign and strongest when "exalted" (its highest point of influence).
The planet possessing the highest strength bestows its own share of Ayurdaya; the planets provide the longevity associated with their positions of lordship or their strong houses. || 2 ||
Ayurdaya refers to the "allotment of life" or the calculation of a person's lifespan based on planetary positions at birth.
One should calculate the portion of the signs traversed; for the lord of the eighth house, the calculation is performed in direct or reverse order according to the bright and dark lunar fortnights. || 3 ||
The eighth house in a horoscope is traditionally associated with longevity and the manner of death. The "bright" and "dark" fortnights refer to the waxing and waning phases of the moon.
In its position of exaltation, seven 7 [years]; in its own house, the Vedas original: "vedo" (4). In ancient Indian numerology, the word "Vedas" represents the number 4. 4; in a friend's house, the Moon original: "śāśī" (usually 1, but here glossed as 2). This refers to the numerical value assigned to specific astrological conditions. 2; these are added to the lifespan. Likewise, in a neutral house, it is like a Brahmin The number 4 is often associated with the four classes of society. 4; in an enemy's house, Fire original: "vanni" (3). Fire is associated with the number 3 due to the three sacred ritual fires. 3 must be deducted. This is the clear method for determining maximum longevity. ||
In one's own house, three years are to be added. When reaching the middle division, five 5, the Sages original: "muni" (7), referring to the seven great rishis. 7, the Serpents original: "nāga" (8), referring to the eight legendary serpent kings. 8, Ten 10, Shiva original: "śā" (11), referring to the eleven forms of Rudra/Shiva. 11, and Three 3 are added depending on the position in the Ascendant and subsequent houses. ||
original: "lagnādika" (Ascendant and others). The Lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth, the most critical point in a horoscope.
