Thus addressed by Parvati, Lord Shiva replied. He spoke these words with affection: "Hear, O Parvati, the determination [of these matters]. The Navagrahas The 'Nine Seizers' or celestial bodies that influence human destiny. are named, O Uma: the Sun, the Moon, the Son of Earth original: "Mahisuta," an epithet for the planet Mars., Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, and likewise Venus. These bestow the span of life upon men who possess the breath of life—be it excellent, middling, or short.

The duration of periods for the planets is as follows:

• Six years for the Lord of Day The Sun.
• Ten years for the Moon
• Seven years for Mars
• Eighteen years for Rahu
• Sixteen years for Jupiter original: "Guru."
• Nineteen years for Saturn original: "Sauri."
• Seventeen years for Mercury
• Seven years for Ketu
• Twenty years for Venus original: "Bhargava."

Following the sequence of these planetary periods and sub-periods, one hundred and twenty years together is proclaimed as the maximum lifespan.
