Nor In the month of Magha approximately January/February, when the Sun is at the New Moon Amavasya on a Sunday, coinciding with the astronomical alignment of Vyatipata and the lunar mansion of Shravana: this is called the "Rise of the Half-Sun" ArdhodayayogaAn extremely rare and auspicious conjunction occurring only once every many years. It is considered more meritorious than a hundred other festivals. ॥
This occurs when the alignment is slightly less than that of the Ardhodayayoga lacking one of the specific factors mentioned above. ॥
During the fortnight of the ancestors Pitru-pakshaThe 15-day lunar period in the month of Ashvina dedicated to honoring deceased relatives, on the thirteenth lunar day, if the Moon is in the lunar mansion of Hasta and the Sun is in Magha, it is called the "Elephant's Shadow." Performing ancestral rites original: Shraddha during this yoga is highly fruitful. ॥ 5 ॥
In the month of Ashvina, during the dark fortnight, on the sixth lunar day, if it falls on a Tuesday original: Bhauma with the Moon in the lunar mansion of Rohini and the Vyatipata alignment: then that sixth day is the "Kapila Sixth," which bestows infinite merit. ॥ 51 ॥
When the Sun reaches the degree equivalent to the shadow of the gnomon PalabhaThe length of the shadow cast by a vertical pillar at noon on the equinox, used to determine latitude and astronomical timing increased by eight, the sage born from a pot original: Kumbhajanman; a title for the sage Agastya rises in the sky. ॥ 52 ॥
Sunday, Monday, Mars-day [Tuesday], Mercury-day [Wednesday], and then Jupiter-day [Thursday], Friday, and Saturday—these are proclaimed as the weekdays. ॥ 1 ॥
Shiva, Durga, Guha the warrior god Kartikeya, Vishnu, Brahma, Indra, and Time original: Kaala; often associated with Yama, the god of death are proclaimed as the presiding deities of the Sun and the other planets in their respective order. ॥ 2 ॥
Thursday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are considered auspicious days for performing good deeds. The others are considered "cruel" malefic days, and those with names associated with Mercury and Jupiter are specifically noted for their traits. ॥ 3 ॥
The Sun is steady, the Moon is moving fickle, Mars is fierce, Mercury is neutral, Jupiter is light quick, Venus is soft, and Saturn is intense sharp. Thus it is said. ॥ 4 ॥
Royal coronations, auspicious ceremonies, matters of self-interest, wearing [new clothes/jewelry], obtaining a title or position, service, and the mining of gold and other gems [should be done on Sunday]. ॥ 5 ॥
Activities involving conch shells, pearls, silver, and the like; wearing ornaments; singing; Vedic sacrifices; the pursuit of wisdom; eating; and matters regarding women or the sale of cows should be performed on Monday original: Somavasara. ॥ 6 ॥
Acquiring land, travel, governing a region, use of poison, weapons, or fire; and matters involving coral, gold, and similar items—these should one do on Tuesday original: Kujavasara. ॥ 7 ॥
