One who has been initiated must undergo the purification rites Samskara; specific life-cycle rituals in the Hindu tradition again if the conditions were voided. If unseasonable rain occurs, the person of good vows should perform the thread ceremony original: upanayana only after careful consideration. During days prohibited for study original: anadhyaya, or when the planetary alignment original: lagna is afflicted, the rite should be avoided.

Unseasonable weather For a period of two to four months, if there is sorrow or a king’s command, one should avoid journeys and major undertakings with great effort. If rain falls out of season, one should wait: one day for the first instance, two days for the second, and three days for the third. In the month of Pausha December–January, one should avoid three days; in the month of Magha January–February, two days; and in the rainy season, one day or at least two hours original: ghatika-dvayam.

101 The Effects of Planets in the Houses

When Saturn original: Sauri, the Sun original: Divakara, or Mars original: Yanisuta are positioned in specific houses at the time of the ceremony:

In the First House (Ascendant): It leads to the destruction of the lineage or imprisonment.
In the Second House: It speaks of loss of wealth.
In the Third House: It brings conflict or fire.
In the Fourth House: It causes the destruction of relatives.
In the Sixth House: It brings good fortune, happiness, and the destruction of enemies.
In the Seventh House: It indicates the death of a wife or significant harm.
In the Eighth House: It results in death or the total loss of wealth.
In the Ninth House: It causes various illnesses and the loss of religious merit original: dharma-hani.
In the Tenth House: It brings various difficulties in one's path.
In the Eleventh House: It results in many kinds of gains and the destruction of enemies.

102 In the ninth house, it makes one devoted to religion; in the second house, it leads to the accumulation of wealth. One should predict the results of Rahu the North Node of the Moon in auspicious houses the same as one would for Saturn. 104

At the commencement of a sacrifice original: makha, all planets should be in auspicious positions, or at least viewed by friendly planets. 105

A person becomes dedicated to their own duties and possesses a superior intellect when Jupiter original: Surejya is in a center house original: kendra; the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th houses. With Mercury and the Moon in favorable positions, one becomes a scholar of wide renown. If the Sun or Mars is strong, the person becomes powerful or a ruler; if Mercury is strong, a knower of gems; if the Moon is strong, a traveler; and if the son of the Sun (Saturn) is strong, a servant of others. 106

If the Moon is in the eighth house from the ascendant, it steals away the person's life. If it is in the remaining houses, the wise say it gives various results. 7 If a malefic planet is in the sixth house, death may follow. If Jupiter is there, one becomes devoid of virtues and wealth. With Mars or the Moon in that position, one becomes cruel and lacks good qualities. 8

If all planets are in the eighth house, they destroy even a learned man. Even if a planet is in its "exaltation" its strongest sign, if it is in a poor divisional chart, it will not yield good results. 9 Even if the Moon is in its own sign, if it is in the ascendant at birth, it makes the child constantly suffer from a wasting disease original: kshaya-rogi; often referring to tuberculosis or chronic malnutrition. 10

The wise say that if malefic planets are in the seventh house, or joined with other malefic planets, the person will experience grief and sorrow in the forest of the world. 11 Even if a planet is in an unfavorable house, it does not cause harm if it is in its own divisional sign, is viewed by auspicious planets, or is in its sign of highest strength.
