13 Especially when Venus original: Shukra is in the 12th house, one should [consider the effects]; it may destroy auspiciousness or increase it [based on the presence of other planets]. 14 Among all [the rules for those observing a vow], eating fruit at midday is said to be of middling merit, but eating in the afternoon is despised. 15 During the rise of Jupiter original: Jiva, or in the hour Hora; an astrological hour approximately one-twenty-fourth of a day of Jupiter, or when Jupiter is in a specific lunar mansion... one becomes a speaker of wise words among the twice-born original: dvijaiḥ; referring to the upper three social classes in the Vedic tradition. 16 Auspicious words should be spoken... Ku?... in the houses of the Maiden original: Kanya; the zodiac sign Virgo... during the night... 17 When Jupiter, Mercury original: Shashiputra; literally "son of the moon", and the Moon are not afflicted by malefic planets, and when Saturn original: Manda, Mars original: Maheya, and the Sun are in the 3rd, 6th, or 11th houses, and [the moon is] in the auspicious signs of Taurus original: Vrisha, Sagittarius original: Turaga, Libra original: Tuja, Leo original: Simha, or Pisces original: Meena, the performance of a vow original: vrata is recommended here, provided the moon is not in the eighth house. 18 With Jupiter in the ascendant... and the Sun in the house of the Sun... it is said by those learned in the science [of astrology] that the vow-taker will be long-lived. 19 In the months of Kartika October–November and Ashvina September–October, the wise should observe the third [tithi/lunar day] as a day prohibited for study original: anadhyaya. 20 The rite of tonsure original: kshara-karma; ritual shaving, the taking of a vow, and entering a home should not be performed [on these days], for [the sake of] the life of the son. 21 On the Ashtaka days the 8th day after a full moon and other specific intervals... one should observe the study-break just as one avoids the forbidden days... the 2nd day [of the lunar fortnight], the 10th of Ashvina, the 4th and 10th of Magha January–February, these are known as days to be avoided. 22 If it thunders or rains during the twilight periods of these days, that whole day becomes a day prohibited for study, and a vow should be avoided then. 23 If the Sun is in the 8th or 4th original: hibuka house from the birth moon, it causes death... in the house of the Sun, [it affects] wife and children... at the time of marriage original: vivaha, it is not auspicious. 24 When the Sun is in the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 7th, or 9th house... it causes [affliction] during a household festival. 25 Even if Jupiter original: Jiva is in Leo original: Simhastha Guru; an astrological period often considered inauspicious for weddings in certain regions or in an unfavorable transit, a wedding or vow should [only] be performed... Rama 5 [if specific conditions apply]. 26 The Sun in its highest exaltation, even if positioned in the 4th or 8th house, bestows happiness, comfort, and success in all works. 27 [Regarding the 12th house]... even [in this position], marriage should not be performed as it results in the destruction of life. 28 The twelve signs... in the 4th, the birth sign, or the 10th...
