Exposition on Auspicious Moments

When the Sun is in the signs of Aries, Aquarius, or Cancer, and on a Thursday, the entrance of the bride into her husband’s home is considered auspicious. 71 When both Jupiteroriginal: Guru and the Sunoriginal: Bhaskara are astrologically pure and strong, the ritual of the second homecomingoriginal: Dviragamana; the ceremony where a bride returns to her husband's home after a short stay at her parents' house following the wedding is successful. Similarly, one must consider the positions of Saturn and Venus. 72 When the planet Venus is in the sign of Capricorn, or when it appears directly in front of a man as he travels, one should carefully observe the movements of Jupiter and Saturn. 73

If Venus is directly in front, it leads to the loss of wealth; if it is to the right, it causes the death of the husband; but if Venus is to the left, it brings great fortune. Among these, the leftward position is the most excellent. 74 In a village associated with Venus, during a musical performance, while seeking alms, or during a national uprising/rebellion, or when being led by one's master, the prohibition of "Facing Venus" original: Prati-shukra; a common astrological taboo against traveling in the direction where the planet Venus is currently positioned in the sky does not cause any harm. 75 Whether in a village, a town, or on a pilgrimage, or if a person is fleeing in fear, if Venus is in front, the sage Bharadvaja says it is acceptable if it is to the left; others say the defect is only felt by some and not others, or that Jupiter’s presence can counteract the anger of Venus. 76

In the months of Chaitra or Pausha, or during the Holy Sleep of Vishnuoriginal: Hari Supte; referring to Chaturmasya, the four months when the god Vishnu is said to sleep, during which many auspicious ceremonies are paused, or during an intercalary month original: Malimucha; an extra month added to the lunar calendar to sync it with the solar year, considered inauspicious, the arrival of a new bride should not take place, nor should the husband travel toward her. 77 However, when entering one’s own home, or traveling in various directions, or during a sudden change of plans, the consideration of "Facing Venus" is not required for the arrival of a new bride. 78

If the timing is wrong, she may become a widow, or wealthy, or wicked, or one whose children die, or a source of joy. She may have good sons, or no sons, or be well-clothed and highly intelligent. 79 The results of an auspicious or inauspicious entry are said to manifest within six months. On the first, tenth, or eighth day of the lunar fortnight, a "Bad Union" original: Kuyoga may occur, which is inauspicious and should be avoided. 80

The astrological combinations of Parigha, Vyatipata, and Vaidhriti are considered very harmful for the first menstruationoriginal: Prathamartava; the timing of a girl's first cycle was historically used in Jyotisha to predict her future health, character, and marriage. 81 If it occurs under a "Brave" original: Vira Ascendant, she will be virtuous; if under others, she may become a widow, a mother of many sons, a seeker of pleasure, or wayward. If it occurs under "Soft" or "Quick" constellations, the result is auspicious. The rest are considered middling or low. 82

She will possess health and good fortune if the first menses occurs when the "Benefic Divisions" original: Saumya Varga are rising. 83 If it occurs when the divisions are "Angry" or malefic, she will always be of poor character, prone to sorrow, disease, and misfortune in marriage. 84

In the month of Leo (Magha), during the equinoxes, or under difficult planetary transits, if a woman falls ill, one should donate sesame seeds original: Tila to remove all astrological defects. 85 Until the Peace Ritualoriginal: Shanti is performed, she should not share a bed. The purity of the Sun, Mercury, and Venus must be considered, as well as the purity of the Sun and Jupiter for the ritual to be successful.
