The Five Sounds

### Obeisance to the illustrious Lord Ganesha.

original: ॥ श्रीगणेशाय नमः ॥ (Shri Ganeshaya Namah). Ganesha is the elephant-headed deity invoked at the start of any venture to remove obstacles.

Victory to the illustrious Form that grants boons.

original: ॥ श्रीवरदमूर्त्तिर्जयति ॥ (Shri Varadamurtir jayati). This is likely a reference to a specific form of a deity or the patron's tutelary god.

Now begins the Commentary on the Five Vowels.

original: ॥ अथ पंचस्वरा टिप्पणम् ॥ (Atha Panchasvara Tippanam). The "Five Vowels" refers to an astrological system using the sounds A, I, U, E, and O to make predictions.

Regarding the determination of knowledge concerning the year of death: having combined the numerical values of the age and the zodiac signs, and having performed the calculation, knowledge of the year of death is attained. When the calculation is carried out, if the result is seven or zero, death is to be predicted in that particular year. However, this only occurs if there is a conjunction or relationship with the malefic planets—namely Mars, Saturn, or Rahu; original: कुजसौरराहूणां (Kuja-Saura-Rahunam). In Vedic astrology, Mars (Kuja), Saturn (Saura/Shani), and the North Node (Rahu) are considered naturally "cruel" or "malefic" and are associated with physical hardship or mortality. otherwise, it does not happen in this manner.

The specific method of calculation will be described further ahead. One should combine the age, the zodiac sign, and the specific digits, and then divide them by three, and so on. In this context, "age" refers to the number of years elapsed from the birth year until the upcoming year, which results in a specific number and sign. The "sign" refers to the numerical value of the zodiac sign occupied by the Moon at the time of birth; for instance, here the sign is Taurus. original: वृषा (Vrisha).
