Beginning with Venus, then the Moon, then the Sun: the planets are increasingly powerful in this order This refers to Naisargika Bala or natural strength, where the Sun is naturally the most potent celestial body. If their strengths appear equal, their natural dominance decides the outcome. The Sun, Jupiter, the Moon, and Mercury are [considered in one group]; then Venus, Mars, and the Sun. Mars, Jupiter, and the Sun [again], then Mars and the Sun are powerful. These are the friends original: "mitrani" in the various groups; those remaining are considered enemies.
In this way, the fate of men should be known, O highly successful one Addressing Parvati. Indeed, the lords of the earth are Jupiter and Mercury; the lords of the classes original: "vargana" are the fierce Mars and Venus, while Saturn is declared as the one who offers sacrifice.
The waning Moon, the Sun, Mars, and Saturn are malefic original: "papa"; literally 'sinful' or 'cruel' in an astrological sense. The others are benefic original: "saumya"; gentle or auspicious. The planet Mercury original: "Budha" becomes malefic when joined with malefics, and benefic when joined with benefics Mercury is considered 'neutral' and takes on the quality of the planet it is currently associated with.
Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter are male; the Moon and Venus original: "bhargava" are female; Mercury and Saturn are known as eunuchs by those who know the truth. Venus and Jupiter are Brahmins the priestly/scholarly class; the Sun and Mars are Kshatriyas the warrior/ruling class; the Moon and Mercury are Vaishyas the merchant class; and Saturn is Shudra the laboring class. Saturn is also considered of mixed caste.
The Sun and Moon are the Kings; Mars is the Commander-in-Chief, O Beloved; Jupiter and Venus are the two Ministers; Mercury is the Prince original: "raja-putra"; and the son of the Sun (Saturn) is the Servant. This is how the divisions of the planets are taught. Thus, the Sun and Jupiter are of the quality of Goodness original: "sattva"; Venus and the Moon are of Passion original: "rajas"; while the son of the Sun (Saturn) and Mars are of Ignorance/Inertia original: "tamas". At the time of birth, a planet manifests its own inherent qualities.
