When Mars is in the Ascendant Lagna: the first house, representing the self and physical body: One experiences fear of punishments or iron original: "daṇḍa-loha-nibhītiḥ," likely referring to injuries from weapons or legal penalties. There is harm to the spouse and others, the loss of wife and sons, and afflictions to the head and eyes. Regarding the "ripening" or final results of one's actions original: "vipāke," the karmic result, one should always provide a remedy, just as one handles a great disturbance or agitation. This is explained further in the sequence. Would such a person be as industrious as a lion original: "kesarī," literally a lion; here implying a bold or restless nature? This is the intended meaning. || 1 ||
Now, the results for Mars in the Second House Dvitīya-bhāva: the house of wealth and family: For one who has Mars original: "Angārako," the glowing coal, an epithet for Mars in the house of wealth, even if wealth is acquired or present, there is little to no benefit for the family or kinsmen. This is compared to a monkey original: "markaṭo" who finds a necklace made of pearls or other gems and puts it around his neck; he guards it and protects it, yet he is a miser with that wealth. The meaning is that those jewels are never actually used for the benefit of the family. Furthermore, if such a person is defeated in a debate, he will likely not face his opponent for a dispute again.

From where would the strength of the arms original: "bāhu-vīryam," physical prowess come? Or from where would family fortune—wealth earned by one's own hands—arise? The "pain of siblings" original: "sahottha-vyathā"—who can say how it happens? No one can say. Furthermore, how could such people perform penance without being ridiculed by others? This is the result for men when Mars original: "Mangalo" is not situated in the third house Sahaja-bhāva: the house of siblings and courage. || 3 ||
When the Son of the Earth original: "Bhū-sutaḥ," another name for Mars is situated in the fourth house Turya-bhāva: the house of home, mother, and lands, of what use is it if other planets are favorable or giving good results? Therefore, happiness derived from friends, dharma, relatives, and one's home or mother is not to be contemplated meaning: it is unlikely to manifest. However, by the mercy, strength, or favor of a "Protector of the Earth" (a King), one may obtain land, villages, and the like. || 4 ||
