Tājika Nīlakaṇṭhī || 1 ||
Now, the author speaks of the signs and degrees of exaltation and debilitation for the planets. He says, "The Sun, etc." For the planets starting with the Sun, the exaltation signs original: 'tuṅga-rkṣa' or 'ucca-rāśi' are as follows: For the Sun, it is Aries original: 'aja' at the tenth degree original: 'digbhiḥ', literally 'the directions', of which there are ten. For the Moon, it is Taurus original: 'ukṣa' at the third degree original: 'guṇaiḥ', the three qualities of nature. For Mars, it is Capricorn original: 'nakra' at twenty-eight degrees original: 'aṣṭa-yamaiḥ', where yama represents 2 and aṣṭa represents 8. For Mercury, it is Virgo at fifteen degrees original: 'śaraiḥ-ekaiḥ', five and ten. For Jupiter, it is Cancer original: 'kulīra' at the fifth degree original: 'bhūtaiḥ', the five elements. For Venus, it is the final sign, Pisces original: 'antya', at the twenty-seventh degree. For Saturn, it is Libra at twenty degrees original: 'nakha', the twenty nails of the hands and feet. These should be understood as the points of maximum exaltation Parama-ucca: the specific degree where a planet reaches its peak power. || Thus ends the exaltations || 31 ||
Now, the debilitation points of the planets, the calculation of exaltation strength, and the lords of the Nine-fold divisions Navāṃśa: a 1/9th subdivision of a zodiac sign, crucial for determining a planet's true strength are discussed. He says, "That [the seventh]..." For those exaltation signs of the Sun and others, the seventh sign—such as Libra for the Sun—is the debilitation sign original: 'nīca'. The degrees are the same. For example, for the Sun, Libra at ten degrees is the point of maximum debilitation. This logic applies to the Moon and all other planets.

This is to be understood for the debilitations. Now, regarding exaltation strength Ucca-bala: a measure of how close a planet is to its peak performance point: The planet's position should be subtracted by its debilitation point. If the result is greater than six signs 180 degrees, subtract it from the full circle 12 signs or 360 degrees. Convert the remainder into degrees and minutes; then divide by nine the divisor for strength units to find the exaltation strength.
Now, the Nine-fold divisions Navāṃśas are explained. Aries original: 'Kriya', Capricorn original: 'Eṇa', Libra original: 'Tauli', and Cancer original: 'Indubha' are the starting points for the signs in three cycles. To clarify: for the signs Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, the first Navāṃśa begins with Aries. For Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn, the first begins with Capricorn. For Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius, the first begins with Libra. For Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces, the first begins with Cancer. In this context, the lords of the signs are simply the lords of the Navāṃśas. Thus ends the initial chart. || 32 ||
