Not only are these isolated subliminal processes comparable to isolated supraliminal processes (such as when a problem is solved in a dream through some unknown method), but there is also a continuous subliminal chain of memory—or perhaps even multiple chains. This involves the kind of individual and persistent recall of old impressions and reactions to new ones that we usually call a "Self." Therefore, I find it acceptable to speak of "subliminal Selves," or more simply, a "subliminal self."
By using this term, I do not mean to suggest that two parallel selves always exist within each of us. Rather, by the "Subliminal Self," I mean that part of the Self which is usually below the threshold of awareness. I believe there may be not only many ways these nearly independent trains of thought work together, but also various disruptions and shifts in personality. Consequently, what was once below the surface may rise above it, either temporarily or permanently. I also believe that no "Self" we can be aware of here cognizance: Awareness, notice, or knowledge. is anything more than a fragment of a larger self. This larger self is revealed in a way that is both unstable and limited, expressed through a physical body original: "organism" that is not built to allow its full expression."
