Vril, in the third sense of the term—or the third phase of its appearance and existence—is the life-force or vital energy of all organic forms of life and all living creatures. From the single-celled moneron original: "moneron"; a term coined by 19th-century biologists to describe the simplest possible organisms, often imagined as simple masses of protoplasm in the slime of the ocean floor, to the humble, almost-organic green sediment found on rocks and old trees, up to the highest forms of animal and human life, Vril is always present and active. Just as protoplasm original: "protoplasm"; the colorless, jelly-like substance that makes up the living part of a cell is the specific state of matter that serves as the body for living organisms, this form of Vril is the specific force or energy that always accompanies organic life. In fact, it is the defining characteristic or attribute of organic life. When science must decide whether or not a thing is "living" in the usual sense of the word, it is the possession or lack of this form of Vril that serves to settle the matter and make the distinction. This third phase of Vril's manifestation is the subject we are considering in this book.
Vril, in its third phase of manifestation, is the energy that performs the functions of life within a living organism. It is the power by which the living creature carries out the processes of digestion, assimilation original: "assimilation"; the process of absorbing nutrients and turning them into body tissue, excretion, nourishment, repair, and elimination. It is the power by which it moves its body through conscious will, and by which the subconscious movements of the
