...to call into play the healing power within the body of the patient, but I also believe that most of the real work is done through the brain—or "brains" Atkinson often referred to "brains" in the plural, likely referencing the solar plexus or major nerve clusters as "abdominal brains" that manage involuntary functions.—and the great nerve centers of the patient. The healer awakens the recuperative abilities hidden within the patient’s body. This does not conflict with the idea of remote healing, mental therapy, magnetic healing, or any other kind of treatment; it merely assumes that instead of the healer’s power working directly upon the diseased part or organ, it reaches the affected area by way of the patient’s brain and intelligent nerve centers.
Every man or woman has within them—though it is dormant in many cases—a certain recuperative power capable of restoring lost function and strength to diseased organs. This power may be awakened by the mental power of the healer, the efforts of the patient themselves, faith, ceremonies, "treatments," or remedies. In many cases, this recuperative power is prevented from operating by the influence of Fear in the mind of the patient. The "treatment" frequently consists of merely relieving the patient of their Fearthought Fearthought: A term coined by New Thought authors to describe a state of mind dominated by anxiety and negative expectations, which they believed caused physical illness. and replacing it with Hope and Faith. This is practically a "taking off of the brakes" which the patient has placed on Nature's healing processes.
Now, the way that Nature accomplishes this work is by sending increased nerve currents original: "nerve-currents"—an early way of describing what we now call nerve impulses or bioelectrical signals. to the affected parts, thus stimulating circulation and restoring lost functioning powers. Of course, you are not conscious of this change happening, as the work is done by involuntary mental processes working largely through the major nerve centers and the nervous system. You know, of course, that "the blood is the life"—that Nature builds up bodies by means of the blood. Flowing through the arteries, the blood carries "liquid flesh" and nourishment to every organ and every part of the body—building, repairing, replenishing, restoring, replacing, and nourishing. On its return journey to the heart, it carries with it broken-down tissue, the waste products of the body's systems, and much other waste...
