Mesmerism, or System of Interactions

Why should I not speak it out publicly?
A great respect soon filled me for the spirit so
grievously misunderstood, which had boldly and deeply reached
the source of nature; and I did not know whether
I should be more astonished at the scientific genius
of the discoverer, or at the so contemptuous overlooking,
at the unjust conduct during the supposed examination
of the new healing method, and finally at the
incomprehensible misjudgment and oblivion that had befallen
this remarkable man—doubly so, since this oblivion took place
not merely among the adversaries of Magnetismus magnetism and the deniers
of its reality, but even among its most decided
adherents and practitioners.

I saw with surprise how, even before the aforementioned
individual investigations and discoveries in natural science,
more than 40 years ago, this inquisitive thinker had already
clearly and concisely set forth the principles which one
must acknowledge as true in natural philosophy; I saw how this spirit,
so far ahead of his time, through his insight into nature
and through the resulting discovery
of the magnetic effects upon the animal organism,
had so far outpaced all subsequent theories and accidental
discoveries in physics and chemistry, and had, in a sense, overtaken and surpassed them.
