ANIMAL MAGNETISM. Animal Magnetism, also known as Mesmerism, was a theory developed by Franz Anton Mesmer. He claimed that an invisible, universal fluid flowed through the body and that illness was caused by "blockages" in this fluid. This commission was tasking some of the era's greatest minds to test if this fluid actually existed.
