The preceding remarks are intended for the general reader. I would now like to respectfully invite the medical profession to consider the facts detailed by my brother. He is neither a fraud quack A person who dishonestly claims to have medical knowledge or skills nor a fanatic original: "enthusiast"; in this period, it implied someone whose judgment was clouded by religious or emotional fervor, but a properly educated, truth-loving physician whose reputation for talent and honesty is beyond doubt.

The facts he presents original: "adduces" cannot be denied original: "controverted". As I was pleased to learn from a doctor who recently arrived from Hooghly A city and district in West Bengal, India, where the author's brother was practicing, these facts are accepted by both Europeans and the local population in the place where they happened. If he has performed at least seventy-six operations and treated eighteen medical cases in just eight months, how can doctors in this country justify their cold indifference original: "heartless apathy" toward Mesmerism?

It is deeply shameful original: "in the highest degree disgraceful" that our doctors cannot be persuaded even to try whether their patients might benefit from mesmeric techniques original: "mesmeric agency". They insist on continuing to inflict pain original: "tortures" during surgery without attempting to see if such suffering could be avoided original: "obviated" through Mesmerism.
