Geomancy is the art of points Latin: punctorum; in geomancy, random dots are marked in sand or paper to form divinatory figures in the place of the stars of the sky and the planets.
He who wishes to learn the art of geomancy well as to the
first principle [should know] that it is a daughter of the art of astrology and is to be imitated, because Geomancy
manifestly follows astrology in its entirety and is produced by it. And so that
a learned man might be able to be [skilled] wherever he wishes, in his heart or in his mind,
by the movement of his own good business, and it was his higher intention to examine
according to the constitution of a nativity The planetary alignment at a person's birth, used here to validate the geomantic reading and to judge concerning the matter about which knowledge is to be
found; it must be known how to sufficiently grasp the truth which without doubt
appears from this to one seeing the matter, so that with the fullness of the art a man may know
all things sufficient to be shown for the present, so as to have true knowledge of the
matters being sought. First, he ought to learn and keep in mind, namely,
whether he is able to know [the thing]. And whether a man can give counsel or a right judgment,
since every question is as much a matter of counsel over doubts. And the second thing
to be known is that this art must be observed in all things with much discretion of
wit, ordered and written according to its rules, lest at various times
diligence be held through the error of some fallacy. For while error can
happen in the master, it is not in the art itself, which is not improbable or
unreasonable; it is in the truth so that it might render to man the manifest
truth concerning doubts, and it warns in defense when there is no question regarding this.
It must be known that the whole fruit of this art is to know well how to judge,
just as it often occurs to God in every place of the world where [there is]
a city of men according to right reason; for even the super-
celestial bodies move and flow uniformly, just as different craftsmen
build one house together.
It must be known concerning the points by the authority and use of the Saracens Latin: Sarracenorum; refers to the Arabic practitioners who developed 'ilm al-raml' (science of the sand), the precursor to Western geomancy who
observe this on account of their old law, by celebrating in this part upon
firm sand or in the dust of the earth, as in the morning; and if it is done in a house,
upon a table or upon paper in which it is written and not weakened;
and so that this may be done lawfully by itself, the daughter of such a way of knowing. The
erection or raising of the points is through this raising of the four elements The 16 geomantic figures are built from four lines, each corresponding to one of the classical elements
and I do not know how to be understood thus, for I take up the observance at the end,
brought forth since in it so many more things will have been trusted. But because the city would rejoice and
it seems to me that whoever wishes to do well for himself and seeks a thing through which [to know],
then he owes more what belongs to him or another, according to what is fitting?
lawfully and truly in every place by itself, if the question is raised and lifted by the art.
