[The master] ought to hear the words of the querent the person asking the question and afterward form the question for judgment, and once formed, examine it diligently as the order of the art prescribes and requires. According to how he can best apply the judgment, he ought to calmly judge the question undertaken so that it may benefit him and those who come to his counsel by speaking of both the good and the evil. The question itself should be declared with all hatred and favor set aside, so that for this reason the virtue of his guiding counsel may be recommended.
It must therefore be known that the first figure one of the sixteen symbolic patterns made of dots used in geomancy in every question formed is placed to represent the querent and their fortune as they approach the master concerning the thing sought original: "re quesita"; the specific subject of the divination. The second [figure] in the same chart is placed as the sign of the thing sought, as is done elsewhere; for example:
If the question is concerning the very life of the querent—whether it be good or bad, long or short—then the first figure represents both the querent and the thing sought. | If the question is about profit, the first figure is the querent, but the second is the thing signified. | If it concerns brothers and sisters, or loves and messengers, as is contained in the third house original: "domo"; the positions in a geomantic chart correspond to the twelve houses of astrology, the first figure is for the querent and the third is for the thing sought. | If it concerns fathers and mothers, as is contained in the fourth house, the first figure is for the querent and the fourth is for the thing sought. | If the question is about a son or daughter, or about clothing, or a promised gift, as is contained in the fifth house, the first figure is for the querent and the fifth is for the thing sought. | If the question is about a sick person or a servant, as is contained in the sixth house, the first house is for the querent and the sixth is for the thing sought. | If the question is about a wife, a messenger, an intervention of love, a doctor, a lawsuit, or a thief? original: "latre"; likely "latrone", as is contained in the seventh house, the first is for the querent and the seventh is for the thing sought. | If the question is about death, fear, the danger of loss, or the guards of prisons?, as is contained in the eighth house, the first is for the querent and the eighth is for the thing sought. | If the question is about a journey, a messenger, letters, or priests, as is contained in the ninth house, the first is for the querent and the ninth is for the thing sought. | If the question is about a lord, the gaining of honor, or medicine, as is contained in the tenth house, the first is for the querent and the tenth is for the thing sought. | If the question is about a friend, profit, a hoped-for and beloved thing, or fortune, as is contained in the eleventh house, the first house is for the querent and the eleventh is for the thing sought. | If, however, it is about someone placed in prison, those bound in chains? original: "vinctis", or someone placed in exile, as is contained in the twelfth house, the first house is for the querent and the twelfth is for the thing sought.
3 Geomancy tells what is to be overcome, and by its tenor, it says the same.
