Decorative fragment of marbled paper
The binding features a fragment of marbled paper pasted over green cloth. Marbling is a method of aqueous surface design which can produce patterns similar to smooth marble or other kinds of stone. The specific "dendritic" or radiating circular patterns seen here were often created by the interaction of pigments and surfactants on a liquid surface before being transferred to paper.
